Nibble: Tape Backup Trends

Tape backup is one of the oldest product segments in the storage market so it's interesting to see how this market changed. The tape drive market had shrunk 8% in revenue in 2002 according to Freeman Reports, and there was little sign in company reports during 2003 that the tape market was going to recover.

STORAGEsearch believes that there is a new barrier to revenue growth in the tape backup market. Disk to disk backup which started out as a niche technology evangelized by Nexsan Technologies just a couple of years before gained a lot of new converts in 2003 - including many tape library companies. The writing was on the wall. The declining cost of hard drives, the massive expansion in corporate data, and the growth of internet backup and offsite replication technologies like iSCSI together meant that the traditional advantage of tape - that you could walk out of the building carrying the backup - was no longer true for most companies.

So if tape backup no longer offered convenient off-site data security for most users - it would have to find a new role. I believe that new role is at the entry level, in very small installations - and at the other end of the scale in systems on a Petabyte scale - where tape libraries have been proven, and cautious users will resist the unknown risks and management factors in disk to disk backup.

The fate of StoneFly Networks, the pioneer in very large capacity disk to disk systems, will be scrutinized carefully by many to see if this technology really is a viable alternative to tape libraries.

Sun Sun Claims Success in High Performance and Technical Computing Market

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - December 17, 2003 - Displaying its mounting strength in the high performance and technical computing market (HPTC), Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced it has the number one position in total server units shipped, according to IDC's Q3CY03 Worldwide Technical Server report.

For the quarter, Sun nearly doubled unit shipments (99.7% growth) versus 37.8% for the overall market quarter-over-quarter, achieving 46.9% unit market share. Adding to the impressive numbers, Sun's HPTC units grew 111% compared to 66% for the market as a whole when compared to the same period in 2002, making Sun the only vendor to outgrow the market in units shipped both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter figures.
BlueArc BlueArc consolidates storage at Princeton and Stanford

SAN JOSE, Calif. - December 16, 2003 -BlueArc announced today that Columbia University, Princeton University's Center for the Study of Brain, Mind and Behavior and Stanford University School of Medicine have selected the SiliconServer. Researchers at Columbia, Princeton and Stanford are deploying BlueArc systems to integrate UNIX and Windows platforms, enabling them to use a single, high-performance centralized file system.

BlueArc SiliconServers simplify system administration by enabling users to utilize and access a shared central pool of storage. Because BlueArc's storage products map security across UNIX and Windows effortlessly, users of both platforms are given equal access rights and the ability to view storage as if it were on local disk native to their environments, without compatibility issues. As a result, customers can achieve the optimal blend of performance, capacity and cost without having to acquire and maintain multiple storage systems. ...BlueArc profile

Sun Sun drops "SPARC" in server PR blunder

Editor:- December 12, 2003 - I was amused to see that in a -Sun press release yesterday regarding a speedup in the Sun Fire V1280 server - the word "SPARC" did not make a single appearance.

We learn that Sun's server is better than IBM's 12 way server, and even the clock rate. But the processor type remains a trade secret.

It's not surprising that I was recently asked by a market researcher covering the open systems market - what SPARC had to do with Sun?

Well it now looks like the creeping disassociation of the SPARC moniker by Sun's marketers has gone all the way at last.

Sun may add the word SPARC in a later correction. Or maybe not.

Sun Reaffirms Commitment to Solaris OS x86

SunNetwork 2003 Conference, BERLIN - December 3, 2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced significant updates to its Solaris OS and additional support for its "military-grade" Trusted Solaris Operating System.

Trusted Solaris for the SPARC and x86 platform includes support for additional Sun hardware such as the low-cost Sun Fire V60x and V65x systems, and the Sun Fire V250 and V440 SPARC systems. The latest version of Sun's military-grade Trusted Solaris OS allows customers to take advantage of unique multi-level security features. Trusted Solaris is now being implemented in commercial application environments, such as banking and healthcare, for the same reasons governments and the armed forces find it useful - military-grade security - which provides mandatory access controls, data separation, and security labels that help prevent unauthorized access and alteration of data.

With more than 375,000 registered licenses since January 2003, the Solaris OS x86 is rapidly gaining partner and customer momentum. Sun recently partnered with AMD to deliver Solaris OS support and optimization for AMD's 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. ...Sun profile
