- Editor's notes:- from
SPARC History.
In
the 1995 edition of the SBus Product Directory we listed the HELIOS SLIC -
an SBus compatible Local Talk Interface card, which was supported with a Solaris
driver to provide file and print access between SPARC and MAC environments.
Later:-
in the 1996 edition of the SPARC Directory we listed 2 software products from
the company. See below.
- The Helios AppleTalk Toolkit is a C programming library under Unix which
enables Unix applications to communicate directly with AppleTalk. Programs
written with the AppleTalk Toolkit run on any Unix system with Helios EtherShare
installed. The toolkit supports DDP, NBP, ZIP, ATP, PAP and ADSP; it contains
sample programs in source code for all these AppleTalk protocols. The toolkit's
functions are largely compatible with those in Inside AppleTalk. A scheduler for
asynchronous completion functions is available.
- EtherShare provides reliable, high performance network services for Apple
Macintosh on SPARC based machines and gives Solaris applications powerful,
flexible printing options on PostScript devices: fast AppleShare compatible
file server (incl. AFP2.1 privileges, DOS short names, fast Find File, Alias,
...); up to 250 volumes per EtherShare server; volumes larger than 2 GB; support
for CD ROM. Throughput between Macintosh and SPARC server up to 800
kilobytes/sec over Ethernet. Number of print spoolers only limited by Solaris
resources. Print to PostScript devices over AppleTalk, IP, directly attached or
via shared memory; support of LocalTalk ImageWriter and DeskWriter.
Comfortable set up of Solaris print queues; sophisticated font management.
Terminal emulation with Communication Toolbox and ADSP support. PowerBook users
on the road can dial into SPARC host via modem with Apple's Remote Access
Server. User friendly Macintosh front-end to Unix mail. Supports and routes
AppleTalk via LocalTalk, Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI. |
| SSD Pricing -
where does all the money go? |
SSDs are among the most
expensive computer hardware products you will ever buy.
Understanding
the factors which determine SSD costs is often a confusing and irritating
process... |

...not made any easier when
market prices for identical capacity SSDs can vary more than 100x to 1!

| Editor:-
StorageSearch.com was the
world's 1st publication to provide continuous editorial coverage and analysis
of SSDs (in 1998) and in the 12 years which have followed we've led the market
through many interesting and confusing times. |

If you often find yourself
explaining to your VC, lawyer or non technical BBQ guests why you spend so
much time immersed in SSD web pages - and need a single, simple, non very
technical reference to suggest - this may be the link they need. | | | |
