Ross Technology - (active in SPARC history 1990 to 1997)

by Zsolt Kerekes - editor SPARC Product Directory

Ross Technology, founded by alumni of Cypress Semiconductor who made the 2nd generation SPARC chip for Sun's SPARCstation 1, used to manufacturer 32 bit HyperSPARC processor chips, modules and motherboards.

These HyperSPARC chips were a competitive upgrade for MBus workstations including Sun Microsystems SPARCstation models 10, and 20.

RossTech used the marketing services of the SPARC Product Directory to generate wider awareness of its products and succeeded in getting many 3rd party oem design slots.

But the company never made the transition to a 64 bit SPARC product.

Ross Technology closed down in 1998.

For a short time afterwards these products were still available from BridgePoint Technical Manufacturing.

...much later:- nearly 20 years later - one of the cofounders of Ross Tech - Trevor Smith - resurfaced into prominence with my readers as cofounder of a company in the enterprise SSD market - Mangstor whose initial products were NVMe PCIe SSD accelerators built around a 100 core controller.

See also:- Ross Technology's Legacy on Wikipedia - "Ross was a significant part of the hardware ecosystem of Sun's SPARC-based systems of the time. They participated in the design of the MBus architecture, and it was Ross Technology's 605-based Pinnacle product line that launched Sun servers into the 2x and 4x multi-processor arena which prior to Ross were confined to single processor server offerings. The hyperSPARC processor developed by Ross, viewed first as a competitor to Sun's own SPARC processor designs, but eventually adopted by Sun and sold both as upgrades and system components."
