Solar Systems & Peripherals, Inc. based in Preston,
Washington, was incorporated in 1990 and carries a comprehensive inventory of
previously owned Sun hardware both used and unused, all thoroughly tested and
accompanied by full warranties. In addition to selling Sun systems, we also
offer rental arrangements-and we can buy your used equipment as well.
- editor's comments:- April 2009 - the SPARC market ain't what it
used to be. And even
Oracle's
acquisition of Sun announced this month can't roll back the clock. But it
used to be an exciting and huge market.
When I published the 1st
edition of the SPARC Product
Directory back in 1992 - I also started researching a worldwide database of
SPARC VARs. It was useful to SPARC manufacturers (including Sun) for snail
mailing information about new products. (We've never supplied email lists
- not even in the pre-web, pre-spam days when they were respectable.)
In
1997 I realized that some of this VAR info should go online - and it would be
useful to buyers as well. It was very popular with buyers for many years.
You can see Solar Systems' profile page from that early era by

here.
And here's another example from just after the peak of the
market in early
2001.
Unlike
hundreds of other VARs which have left the Sun market (or no longer exist at
all) Solar Systems is still in the same business today (April 2009). So they
must be doing something right.
For me as a publisher the storage market
- and StorageSearch.com - has been
our primary business for most of the past decade. But once in a while I still
look back nostalgically at the glory days of SPARC.
And within the
storage market - we're the lead publication in the hottest and fastest growing
segment today (despite the recession) -
SSDs... That's a market to
make your head spin. |
