the last of the SPARC computer OEMs?
The number of computer
manufacturers manufacturing and actively marketing SPARC systems based
on their own motherboards has shrunk from more than 30 in 1996 to the handful
or so of companies listed in the table below.
In 1996 - 5
manufacturers designed and marketed commercial SPARC processor chips, today that
has declined to just 2 - Sun and Fujitsu.
Although the OpenSPARC
inititaive may change that - early indications are that new 3rd party SPARC
chips will be low processing power units aimed at embedded applications, and not
high horsepower server engines.
Users can still obtain SPARC servers
from about 20 or so manufacturers in various form factors by clicking on the
links below. Most of these other manufacturers either use motherboards from the
companies listed on the left, or have exited the SPARC market but may still have
some old stock left.
