The number of computer manufacturers manufacturing and actively marketing SPARC systems based on their own motherboards shrank from a peak of more than 30 companies in 1996 to just a handful or so of companies in 2007.

In 1996 - 5 manufacturers designed and marketed commercial SPARC processor chips, in 2007 that had declined to just 2 - Sun and Fujitsu.

Although the OpenSPARC inititaive may change that - early indications are that new 3rd party SPARC chips will be low processing power units aimed at embedded applications, and not high horsepower server engines.
