  • editor's comments:- Tatung's main business nowadays (April 2003) is in Intel architecture servers. The company appears to have exited from the sharp end of the SPARC systems market, although their web site still shows some legacy products.

Tatung started its involvement with SPARC technology in 1988 and actively promoted its SPARC workstations and servers upto December 2001.

During the mid 1990s both Tatung and its main rival Axil Computer both claimed to be the leading SPARC compatible systems manufacturers (although Sun was in fact #1). When Axil closed down in 1998 - this left the field clear for Tatung. But Sun abused its power as the main manufacturer of SPARC chips to price its main competitors out of business - when it got hit by the dotcom meltdown and had to fight for market share within the SPARC base. Another SPARC OEM, who switched to the Intel/Linux market said about this - "We cannot do business with a company that eats its young."

Tatung advertised in the SPARC Product Directory web site from 1997 to 2001. The banner ad on the right ran in the SPD in July 1999.
