Nibble: Re
SPARC Upgrades
In the early 1990's a lot of companies
entered the Sun processor upgrade market with chip and motherboard upgrade
products which competed directly with Sun.
Opus Systems, Weitek, Ross
Technology, Axil and Fujitsu offered 32 bit high speed upgrades. There were also
about a dozen other SPARC workstations clone companeis which offered board level
upgrades. Cycle Computer, acquired by Tadpole, was one of the few companies to
span the 32 to 64 bit market transition. Most of these original companies and
products no longer exist, or if they do, the upgrades themselves have been
overtaken by faster technology.
Owners of ancient SPARC systems, using
VMEbus technology, still have the widest range of upgrade options available.
They can support their legacy VME I/O systems either using modern native
VME SPARC processor
cards or use desktop SPARC systems connected by
VME-bus to PCI
Interfaces, some of which still support Sun-4 emulation.
Nowadays
(in 2002) Tadpole is the only company which offers a credible competitive
alternative to users who want to upgrade their older Sun workstations. | | |
